I finally was able to tear myself away from my computer screen long enough to watch the season 4 premiere of the brilliance that is Mad Men. I am a huge fan of the show and have been counting down for several months. I was not disappointed. Matt Weiner told what this season will explore in the first line, "Who is Don Draper?"We thought we knew, but now everything has changed.
Don Draper used to be a gorgeous, genius ad man who was the pampered talent at a highly successful agency. He used to be the rakish playboy who could have his cake and eat it too. Not only did he have a beautiful wife and adorable children, but he also had a long list of women who couldn't help jumping into bed with him. He was a sexy man with a dark secretive past.
In this season, Don is a partner in a shaky start-up ad agency. His wife has left him and has practically emasculated him by living with her new man in the home Don and Betty shared. He now comes home to a small, depressing apartment that is empty. His encounters with women are unemotional and even masochistic. Don's secrets are now out in the open. And although, he is still a very handsome man, his sexy has been diminished.
Now don't all jump on me, ladies and gays. I will explain. A lot of Don's appeal had to do with his power at the agency, his power over women, and his power to control his environment. All that is gone. His bad temper which seemed admirably fearless at Sterling Cooper is now jeopardizing the small agency that he's built. He seems to have lost his power over women. Betty is openly hostile towards him. A woman that he takes out on a date refuses to have sex with him. He is also sleeping with a married woman who is clearly using HIM. His sexy is not working like it used to.
Now that he has lost all the trappings of success, Don will have to redefine himself. I have no doubt that writers have something great up their sleeves. What did you think of the first episode of season 4?
